Opening the door to historic Polish Galicia.
"The hills of Galicia have seen empires rise and fall, but the spirit of its people remains unbroken."
The Galician Poles tree, a branch of the Galicia Genealogy website, focuses on Roman Catholic Poles and their descendants, whose family lived in the Austrian Empire province of Galicia. These families lived in today's Małopolska and Podkarpackie voivodeships, as well as in Western Ukraine.
This tree is here to document the histories, stories and photos of those who lived in this area of Eastern Europe.
"Galicia is a mosaic of cultures, languages, and traditions, where every stone tells a tale of resilience and belonging."
"Habsburg Galicia is a tangible example of the fact that 'history matters' - in this case it is the history of the long 19th century (1772-1914)."
-Jaroslav Hrytsak, "The Idea of Galicia"
"My homeland', says the guest, 'no longer exists. My homeland was Poland, Vienna, this house, the barracks in the city, Galicia, and Chopin. What's left? Whatever mysterious substance held it all together no longer works. Everything's come apart. My homeland was a feeling, and that feeling was mortally wounded. When that happes, the only thing to do is go away."
- Sándor Márai, "Embers"
